Unity Technologies has been doing a huge amount of work in virtual reality (VR) technology over the past few years, integrating head-mounted displays (HMDs) with its Unity Engine, including the likes of the Oculus Rift, PlayStation VR, Gear VR and, in the near future, HTC Vive and Google Cardboard. But that’s not all the developer is working on for the tech. The company has just unveiled its rumoured VR scene editor, allowing players to edit content from within a HMD.

The new feature was revealed on-stage at the 2016 Vision Summit by Timoni West, Principal Designer at Unity Technologies. The Oculus Rift and its Oculus Touch controllers were used to enter a balcony scene within a city, place furniture and use controllers to quickly manipulate them. Various menus added more customisation to the scene, including bringing a balloon dog into the environment.

It was noted that the team was ‘still just getting started’ with the tech but, in the long term, it hopes the platform will become ‘just as customisable as Unity is in 2D’.

Of course, the concept immediately draws comparisons to Epic Games’ VR Editor for Unreal Engine 4, which was revealed last week. How will the concepts differ going forward?
