Virtual reality (VR) developers are in heaven today as they’ve been told by Gabe Newell, CEO of Valve, that all of them attending the Vision Summit 2016 over the next two days will be getting the HTC Vive Pre developer kit for free.

HTC’s latest head-mounted display (HMD) was unveiled at the Consumer Electronic Show (CES) in Las Vegas, Nevada last month. The HTC Vive Pre as its now called features a redesigned headset which is slightly smaller and sleeker. The wireless motion-tracked controllers have seen the biggest change, looking far more stream lined and less chunky. They also have a hole at the top of the unit, rather than the big flat plate that was on the previous version.

The HTC Vive will be launching its pre-orders in just a few weeks’ time on 29th February 2016, with details about the consumer version of the kit expected to arrive shortly before then. The full device should be shipping the following April, and will include everything a user needs for a Room Scale experience. A price for the device is yet to be revealed.

VRFocus will continue to follow all the news from the Vision Summit, reporting back any further announcements.
