Penrose Studios the virtual reality (VR) animation house founded by Oculus Story Studio veteran Eugene Chung has revealed its latest VR offering. Titled Allumette a trailer for the VR movie had a recent screening to select audiences prior to the full release later this year.
The basis for Allumette is loosely taken from Hans Christian Andersen’s short story “The Little Match Girl”. As Chung writes on Penrose Studios’ blog: “Allumette is intimate on an emotional scale – focusing on the love between a mother and her child as well as the sacrifices that people are willing to make for the greater good.” The world Penrose has created is inspired by the city of Venice, but where Venice floats on water this VR landscape is suspended in the sky, with the clouds acting like the network of canals that crisscross the Italian city.
The Allumette trailer was shown on the HTC Vive head-mounted display (HMD) but the movie will also support the Oculus Rift and PlayStation VR headsets. The experience is a mixture of videogame and immersive story with some interaction being afforded to the viewer. “If you give people too much ability to interact with things, it’s often harder for us to tell a story,” said Chung to The Verge.
The film continues Penrose Studios’ development and understanding of VR filmmaking with its previous efforts including The Rose and I which is available for the Gear VR headset. Chung states: “Penrose focuses on expanding the boundaries of what we know we can do in VR, and we hope Allumette takes us a step further in that direction.”
