NVIDIA’s new range of graphics cards, the 1000 series, is set to debut later this month with the GeForce GTX 1080 Founder’s Edition. The ‘Founder’s Edition’ of the GeForce GTX 1080 is a version of the card built internally by NVIDIA and will act as the ‘reference board’, a typically limited build, for this new line. However, the GeForce GTX 1080 Founder’s Edition will not be limited in production quantities.

Introducing a new graphics card architecture, known as ‘Pascal’, the GeForce GTX 1080 kicks-off the 1000 series with a significant improvement in performance over previous staple architecture design, ‘Maxwell’. The sister card, GeForce GTX 1070, will launch in June and, while reportedly not as big a jump in performance as the GeForce GTX 1080, will deliver a significant improvement over the existing 900 series, such as the GeForce GTX 970 and GeForce GTX 980.

The GeForce GTX 1080 Founder’s Edition will be the first version of the card available at retail, launching on 27th May 2016. Other editions of the graphics card will also be available, however NVIDIA has stated that they have used ‘premium part’s for the development of the GeForce GTX 1080 Founder’s Edition, and thus this edition of the card will likely be more expensive than those from ‘partner’ developers.

The GeForce GTX 1080 Founder’s Edition will be available at NVIDIA.com for customers in the UK, France and Germany and also via board partners across the whole of Europe. For those not yet familiar with the performance of the GeForce GTX 1080, VRFocus recently delivered a handy technical specifications guide that compares this first entry in the 1000 series to its sister release, the GeForce GTX 1070, as well as other NVIDIA graphics cards currently on the market.
