With the continued growth of virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) technology, there’re numerous companies and institutions outside of the videogame industry exploring the possible applications for both. Stanford University, HHMI Janelia Research Campus and Queen’s University are just a few who are testing new ideas in these fields. Earlier in the year Microsoft challenged academic institutions to submit their ideas to unlock the potential of its HoloLens head-mounted display (HMD). This month the tech giant announced the winners of the Microsoft HoloLens Academic Research Grant Program.
The five recipients of the grant were: The Frank-Ratchye STUDIO, Carnegie Mellon University with Open-Source Investigations in Mixed Reality: Interactive Art, Visualizations, and Expressive Interfaces on HoloLens, Dartmouth College with Augmenting Reality for the Visually Impaired with Microsoft HoloLens, Virginia Tech with Collaborative Analysis of Large-Scale Mixed Reality Data, Clackamas Community College and Intel with HoloLens Curriculum for Trade-Based Education and the University of California, Berkeley with Immersive Semi-Autonomous Aerial Command System (ISAACS).
The universities will each win $100,000 USD from Microsoft to continue funding the projects. Alongside the financial win, the winners will each receive two Microsoft HoloLens development kits worth $6000 USD in total.
