If you’ve been following VRFocus over the last few months then you may have read about Galaxy Explorer the winning idea in Microsoft’s ‘Share Your Idea’ competition which launched late last year for HoloLens. Since the competition closed in January a team at Microsoft has been developing Galaxy Explorer into a fully fledged app, posting updates and behind the scenes videos explaining the creative process. Now at today’s keynote for Build 2016 the company has announced the app and source code are now available.
The Galaxy Explorer app had been planned from the very beginning to be open source, to allow HoloLens developers to play with and experiment with the software. The source code can now be downloaded straight from GitHub, for HoloLens studios to use.
The aim of Galaxy Explorer is to give users the ability to wander the Milky Way and learn about our galaxy. Navigating through the stars and landing on the myriad of planets that are out there.
VRFocus will continue to follow the development of HoloLens, reporting back with any further announcements.
