Metal Gear Solid probably won’t be joining the virtual reality (VR) revolution any time soon, if ever. That’s somewhat ironic given that the series has in the past integrated the concept of the technology into its labyrinthine plots and even used it as the basis for bonus missions. While fans won’t see anything official for some time, though, a group of fans are working to bring scenes from the original PlayStation title into VR with a brand new project called The Fan Legacy: Metal Gear Solid.

As reported by IGN, that team actually consists of the same developers that were working on Shadow Moses, a fan remake of the title that was cancelled by publisher Konami. It would appear, then, that the developer is using its past work to create this project in which players can visit visually updated renditions of Shadow Moses Island, the facility that players infiltrated as protagonist Solid Snake back in 1998. In fact, it appears that Snake’s original voice actor, David Hayter, is involved with the project.

Hayter helps introduce the trailer for the project, seen below. Later on, the footage even teases that players will visit some scenes from other Metal Gear Solid titles. Specific head-mounted displays (HMDs) for the experience haven’t been confirmed, though if it’s coming to PC then the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive are safe bets. It’s also not clear when the title will be released, though the team did make it certain that this is “an unofficial, nonprofit production, the project is a gift, from the fans, but also addressed to the fans; to share our affection for the seminal franchise.”
