While the majority of virtual reality (VR) software is aimed to entertain, with a range of videogames and 360-degree videos available for head-mounted displays (HMDs) like Google Cardboard and Samsung Gear VR, the technology can also be used as an immersive educational tool. A new Kickstarter crowd-funding campaign by VR Disciples is seeking funding to create VR Jerusalem, an app that will allow viewers to experience religious historical locations.

VR Jerusalem aims to hit $25,000 USD to re-create ancient Jerusalem as an interactive city that viewers can explore and learn about. The app will be made available to download for Windows computers at a $1 donation. If the campaign surpasses the Kickstarter goal, the application free. And should it hit $30,000 USD VR Disciples will make it available for free for the Samsung Gear VR headset.

The other stretch goals are: $50,000+ : The VR application will also be made available as a web app on all major browsers. $75,000+ : The VR Jerusalem VR & Web experiences will get a multi-user feature. $100,000+ : Upgrades to VR Jerusalem VR & Web experiences based on Kickstarter supporter feedback.

The reward tiers range from $1 USD to $5000 USD, but the $100 USD tier and upwards is only available for those based in the US.

VRFocus will continue to bring you the latest updates on the campaign, reporting back.
