The UK has a thriving virtual reality (VR) community that stretches across the country, fuelled by developers and enthusiasts alike. Aside from the obvious hotspot of London, another area of the country is the north east, focused around the city of Newcastle Upon Tyne. The city plays host to VR studios and events, EVE: Valkyrie developer CCP Games is based there and the VRTGO conference which VRFocus liveblogged earlier this month takes place there. Now a new meetup group has been launched today under Virtual Reality North East.

Virtual Reality North East has been created by Michael Wass, an Enterprise Mobile Consultant for ShinobiControls. On the groups meetup page it states: “VR is the future. Are you a dev looking towards novel technology? Are you an entrepreneur looking to hitch onto the biggest thing to happen since the internet? VR North East looks to bring together visionaries, future gazers and philosophers that want to get in on the ground floor. The future is almost here- let’s see if we can carve ourselves a slice of it.”

Naturally there isn’t any events scheduled yet and the group needs to build up members, but with the regions avid support of VR that won’t likely be a problem. VR’s presence in the mainstream media by way of launches like Samsung’s Gear VR head-mounted display (HMD) will help to attract larger audiences to the small events usually held by meetup groups.

VRFocus will continue to follow the latest updates from Virtual Reality North East and the meetup group grows.
