The issue of exclusive titles for virtual reality (VR) platforms such as Oculus Rift, Sony Computer Entertainment’s (SCE’s) PlayStation VR and HTC Vive, has flared up on a number of occasions. VR enthusiasts don’t want a console war to happen in the industry, where they’ll need every headset to play every videogame if a developer only makes a title for one specific device. The subject recently came back after Oculus VR’s announcement at The Game Awards last week that Harmonix were developing Rock Band VR for Oculus Rift. But VR has a fantastic community spirit in which everyone within it, from small indies to large multi-nationals want to see it succeed, and Valve’s Chet Faliszek took to twitter to say just that.
In his twitter posting Faliszek said: “People really getting worked up in VR land this weekend. The console wars were stupid, so let’s all be on the same side – the side of VR.” Faliszek received number of responses agreeing with the statement, that working together would be far more beneficial for the fledgling industry than everyone trying to compete.
But this isn’t always possible, as in the Rock Band VR instance this wasn’t just Harmonix’s project. The developer worked alongside Oculus VR for the title, and when one twitter user tweeted to founder Palmer Luckey about exclusives and console war mentality, he responded: “We funded it, we produced it, and the hardware interfaces with our tracking system. Expecting it everywhere is unreasonable.”
And that is the main problem. Studios require funding, especially the smaller ones as videogames aren’t cheap to make, and when that funding/assistance comes from a hardware manufacturer then is it unreasonable to expect that title to be made available to just one platform? Its an issue that isn’t going to be solved anytime soon, but with VR’s dedicated community it might be.
