Even if the arrival of consumer-ready head-mounted displays (HMDs) has taken a lot longer than expected, the virtual reality (VR) industry is accelerating at an alarming rate. Oculus VR has well over doubled in size since it was purchased by Facebook for $2 billion USD last year, and other major players such as Samsung, HTC and Sony Computer Entertainment (SCE) are now involved. ‘Madness’ is a good word to describe the state of the industry and the technology right now, and that’s exactly how Jason Kingsley, CEO and Co-Founder of Battlezone developer Rebellion puts it.
Kingsley recently took to Twitter to share some thoughts on the future of VR and the effects it might have on those that use it. “There will be some interesting psychological experiments on people happening in VR from what I have just experienced,” he said, later noting that, in some experiences, he had simply ‘refused’ to carry out certain actions. “I’ve just refused to do something in a VR setting as it was not compatible with my personal moral compass.
“People justify doing bad things in all sorts of ways, always have and always will,” he added. It is in the doing or not doing that we know ourselves.
“With VR I think we’re uncovering a new frontier. Like most frontiers, we’ve not sorted out the rules yet. It will be madness for a while,” Kingsley concluded.
Battlezone will mark Rebellion’s VR debut. The tank battling videogame serves as a reboot of the 1998 videogame of the same name and is set in neon environments in which players will destroy enemies using a range of weapons. Battlezone is set to arrive first on PlayStation 4 with support for the PlayStation VR HMD and will then come to PC, integrating the Oculus Rift too.
