For users who’ve previously invested in one of the older Open Source Virtual Reality (OSVR) head-mounted displays (HMDs), Sensics one of the companies behind the platform has announced a new upgrade kit for the device bringing it inline with the current model.
Both the 1.3 and 1.4 models of the OSVR Hacker Development Kit (HDK) can be upgraded to the HDK 2 with a DIY kit that’s available through the OSVR Store.
OSVR HDK 2 launched last month in partnership with Razer. The headset uses two high-quality screens, giving it a 2160 x 1200 resolution, bringing it on par with other HMDs currently on the market. The upgrade kit features these dual 1080×1200 90 Hz low-persistence OLED screens, pre-assembled with matching drive electronics and mounting plate for $220 USD. This kit includes all the parts you need to perform this upgrade, which Sensics states can be done within 15 minutes.

Sensics has newly launched the store which features the OSVR HDK 2 for $399.99, as well as a variety of accessories, including sensor modules and the Backspin wireless controller.
The website also serves as an online marketplace for virtual reality (VR) vendors to showcase their innovations alongside serving as a hub of VR knowledge for the community at large. It’s this community spirit that the OSVR platform has been built around, the software itself connects applications and game engines to a multitude of VR devices using a common universal interface, thus making it easy to create cross-platform VR experiences with universal device support.
