There’re virtual reality (VR) experiences that aim to educate, those that entertain and those that bring a more social aspect to the technology. Looking to combine all those elements is Arizona-based developer TimeFire VR with its VR city Hypatia.
Hypatia is being designed as a next generation web browser using an old European city style to bring people together, while providing cultural and educational experiences, in an entertaining setting where collaboration and creativity are the currency. The city features more than 70 miles of streets where citizens can walk down tree lined canals, watch a theatrical play, attend a concert, visit a museum, paint using 2D and 3D tools, explore, shop, or read a holographic book from their virtual smartphone.
TimeFire VR hasn’t revealed which head-mounted displays (HMDs) will be supported, although with Hypatia’s educational stance mobile VR devices like Samsung Gear VR and Google Cardboard are a likely avenue. The project began development in 2014 and TimeFire will be offering early alpha access in the summer. One feature the team are looking to implement is a voice recognition system unique to VR, this will aid in browsing the Internet, finding locations, and communicating with those in the city.
