There are very few full first-person shooters (FPSs) heading to virtual reality (VR) platforms at the moment but, of the list of confirmed titles, SUPERHOT has to be one of the most anticipated. The crowd-funded project featured prominently on the Oculus Rift head-mounted display (HMD) at Oculus VR’s booth at a number of events throughout 2014, though has since not been seen as much in VR. A release is expected in the very near future though, and this week the developer behind the title is teasing ‘some exciting news’ to arrive in the news few weeks.

The developer stated as much in an update going out to Kickstarter backers this past weekend. “Pay close attention to our social media activity,” a message read, “we will have some exciting news in the coming weeks…” It’s quite likely that this news is in fact the full release date for the title. The update also detailed an improved melee system for the title, which the developer noted had been a sort of ‘abandoned child’ so far in development, with an odd animation that has been polished up. Apparently the team is also adding more – in its own words – ‘Oompf!’ to the experience.

SUPERHOT has a core mechanic in which time moves only when the player moves. When you stand still, the world around you grinds to a halt, with bullets slowing right down. Players can then negotiate a path out of harm’s way as they plot a course to eliminate all enemies within a level, usually having to arm themselves first. The state of the title’s VR support is currently unknown though, when it was last seen running on the Oculus Rift’s second development kit (DK2), players could physically lean out of the way of bullets using the device’s positional tracking.
