There was a lot to take in during the Sony press conference at this year’s Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3), especially for the lineup for its virtual reality (VR) head-mounted display (HMD), PlayStation VR. It has now been announced that the Star Wars Battlefront VR experience is called Star Wars Battlefront X-Wing VR Mission.

VRFocus recently reported during the Electronic Arts (EA) conference of the partnership of Criterion Games and EA with DICE in the development of Star Wars Battlefront X-Wing VR Mission, so it has been fresh in our minds for when the two names came up on screen. However, if it was mistaken, the orchestra present at the conference surely made it impossible to not realise that Star Wars Battlefront was coming, and with the very brief intro during the EA conference it was clear that the experience would be based on the flight of the X-Wing.

The preview for this title was only short but very much self-explanatory with the collision and dogfighting in space between the X-Wing ships, as well as missiles and explosions filling space. It was said earlier this year by John Koller, Vice President of Marketing at what was then acknowledged at Sony Computer Entertainment (SCE), that this title was something to look out for as a benchmark for VR gaming: “Battlefront is going to be one of those games that will really show gamers what it means to be in the world of VR. It’s very special. And just by the nature of it being designed as a VR experience, it’s going to be very different than the PlayStation 4 game.”

It has also been previously reported that the videogame will be powered by Frostbite, and is exclusive to PlayStation VR. It wasn’t stated when the exact release date would be, but the release date for the PlayStation VR itself was announced for the US.
