Samsung’s first official launch of its consumer mobile virtual reality (VR) head-mounted display Gear VR occurred in the US on Monday, 20th November. Since then other countries around the world have seen availability for the device surface through the manufacturers online store. Now Samsung has announced the headset is available in Canada.

The latest edition of the Gear VR is compatible with Samsung’s top of the range smartphones, Galaxy Note5, Galaxy S6 Edge+, S6 and S6 Edge. With new foam cushioning, the Samsung Gear VR is 19 percent lighter than the previous Gear VR Innovator Edition, ensuring a more comfortable experience. Also, the Gear VR’s touchpad has been improved, providing better control while enjoying the varied selection of VR films, videogames and 360 degree video.

“Samsung Canada has been at the forefront of delivering mobile experiences, and the newest Gear VR makes virtual reality accessible to even more consumers,” said Paul Brannen, Executive Vice President Mobile Solutions, Samsung Electronics Canada in a statement. “The Gear VR offers a truly innovative experience, getting Canadians closer to incredible 360 degree content in a completely immersive way.”

The consumer edition of the Gear VR will be available in Frost White and can be purchased from select Canadian retailers and Samsung Experience Stores from today for $139 CDN.

VRFocus will continue to follow all the latest updates to the Gear VR, reporting back any further announcements.
