For those that enjoy going to art exhibitions you may have been to the recent Ai Weiwei exhibition at the Royal Academy of Arts (RA). If you didn’t the RA has launched a special 360-degree online experience to enjoy the celebrated Chinese artists work from the previous 25 years.
Ai Weiwei 360 begins with an introduction by RA Artistic Director Tim Marlow and WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange. The tour then takes viewers to the courtyard of the RA with an introduction on how to manoeuvre around the experience using a mouse and keyboard on a PC. This area features Weiwei’s first installation ‘Tree’ before moving into the exhibition itself. As users wander around a voiceover from Channel 4 News anchor Jon Snow greets you as you enter each gallery. The tour consists of navigable 360-degree imagery, video and audio channels. Specially created video helps viewers discover the meaning, context and technical detail of Ai Weiwei’s work.
While Ai Weiwei 360 can be viewed via PC or tablet the experience also supports head-mounted displays (HMDs) like Google Cardboard and Samsung’s Gear VR. For the Cardboard version follow the link on the site, while the Gear VR version is slightly more complex but full instructions are given.
The online exhibition is completely free and will run until 20th, November 2016. VRFocus will continue to report on the latest 360-degree experiences as announcements are made.
