If you thought you were going to miss the old ways of getting a physical copy of boxed videogames now that virtual reality (VR) is here, you are wrong – kind of. It has been announced that Rebellion will be getting a boxed edition published by PlayStation.

Battlezone will be one of the few titles to get this opportunity to release both a digital and physical copy in time for the launch of the PlayStation VR on 13th October this year, which is very much fitting considering the origin of the videogame.

Jason Kingsley, Co-Founder of Rebellion, shared the studio’s feelings on this retail move: “We are delighted Rebellion can work with PlayStation to give Battlezone a boxed, retail release. We’re extremely proud of Battlezone; it’s a title that helps to show just how powerful and transformative an experience VR can be.

“With help from our friends at PlayStation, Battlezone will have an even broader reach than we could have imagined. Right from the earliest days of Project Morpheus they’ve played a huge part in supporting independent VR games development and worked closely with our team to deliver the kind of complete VR gameplay experience players have been calling out for. We know you’ll love it if you play it – and now you’ve got no excuse not to!”

Vice President of Marketing at Sony Interactive Entertainment Europe (SIEE), Usama Al-Qassab, commented on the partnership as a whole in the press release: “2016 is the year of VR, and we are committed to providing a full range of the best and most innovative experiences for PlayStation VR at launch. We have been working with a number of independent studios to bring their creative visions to life, and are delighted to be partnering with Rebellion to bring the classic Battlezone franchise to PlayStation VR.”

Battlezone is currently playable at Gamescom.
