Razer are continuing to tease a new virtual reality (VR) announcement for this year’s Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3), set to be held in Los Angeles later this month. Following last week’s debut teaser image, another image has surfaced suggesting that the announcement will include details of a platform which doesn’t restrict users with digital rights management (DRM) software implementation.
DRM is a big talking point in the VR industry currently, as Oculus VR is making moves to secure exclusive content for the Oculus Rift. The company is arguably positioning the Oculus Rift head-mounted display (HMD) in a similar fashion to the console market, wherein it’s believed that exclusive videogame titles can secure additional sales. However, the internet always finds a way, and software known as ‘Revive’ has allowed users of the HTC Vive to access many titles otherwise only available for the Oculus Rift.
Oculus VR issued a firmware update which secured the software available via their proprietary online distribution platform, Oculus Home, but it wasn’t long before Revive followed-suit and was updated to workaround this DRM once again.
That debate is for another day perhaps, but with this in mind it’s easy to see how Razer are aiming to ride the wave with the latest teaser image, included below.
