Earlier this week VRFocus reported on British firm Opto looking to hit a Kickstarter funding goal of £40,000 GBP to bring its mobile head-mounted display (HMD) to market. It’s easily done that with time to spare achieving £41,494 at the time of writing.
The Opto HMD accepts smartphones from 4 – 5.5 inches but the big difference between it and other competitors is the audio. Headsets like Merge VR, Samsung Gear VR or Google Cardboard to name a few all require external headphones to give users immersive sound. With the Opto two 40mm 32ohm speakers are built into the head strap giving the unit a tidier, all-in-one design. When you take off the magnetic front cover to put your phone in simply plug in the 3.5mm headphone jack as well.
Opto has been created by Tom Jarvis an industrial designer and Richard Stephens a software developer, and with the funding goal reached the pair are now considering a stretch goal. They’ve been listening to suggestions for a case of some kind to keep the Opto in, helping make transportation easier and preventing the headset from getting damaged.
Now the Kickstarter is completed the team will now be focused on the release which is slated for October 2016. VRFocus will keep you updated with any further updates posted to the funding page.
