It was almost exactly a year ago now that virtual reality (VR) specialist Oculus VR first announced its film-centric division, Oculus Story Studio. The new team was revealed back at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival along with its first project, Lost. Since then the group has also gone on to reveal Henry, a short film in which the viewer follows a lonely hedgehog on his birthday. Both experiences will be available for the Oculus Rift head-mounted display (HMD). Today, Oculus Story Studio is officially announcing its third film, Dear Angelica, along with some new creation software.

Revealed at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, the software is called Quill and sounds similar in concept to Oculus Medium, with both using the Oculus Touch position-tracked controllers to create art within a VR environment. Whereas the latter has been used to create VR sculptures, though, Quill appears to have helped Dear Angelica art director Wesley Allsbrook in creating the experience. It allows the user to draw lines with their hands that can then be altered in several ways.

Several outlets that have gone hands-on with the software, including CNET, liken it to Tilt Brush for the HTC Vive. It’s said to still be an internal tool used for creating stories, and likely won’t see a wider release.

Dear Angelica, meanwhile, is an animated story that follows a young girl as she imagines her mother, an actress. The piece is told through brushstrokes and viewers can move through the experience as if unfolds. A poster for the piece can be seen below, though it’s not yet clear when it might be releasing in full.
