Oculus VR had arguably the biggest day in its short history on 6th January 2016 when it finally launched pre-orders for the Oculus Rift virtual reality (VR) head-mounted display (HMD) at some $599 USD. The kit can currently only be purchased through the company’s official website, with a limited batch of units also set to arrive at select US retailers later down the line. Oculus VR hasn’t revealed how well pre-orders are doing thus far, though has hinted that it’s more than happy with the figures. Now, however, a new report has suggested at a huge number of people at least visited the company’s site on the big day.

According to Fortune, global market intelligence company SimilarWeb is reporting that over 1.9 million visits were made to Oculus.com on launch day, which was a 224 percent increase over traffic from the previous day. This puts an absolute cap on just how many Oculus Rift units could have been ordered on that day, though it’s obviously very likely far above the real figure. That 1.9 million views will include the hours before the pre-order launched and, of course, the people that didn’t end up ordering a unit at all.

All the same it’s an encouraging sign about the circulation that the launch of pre-orders enjoyed. Those orders have now been backdated from the first shipping day of 28th March 2016 all the way back to July 2016, with every unit that’s been manufactured so far already having been claimed. Those that do pre-order the Oculus Rift will be getting a free copy of CCP Games’ anticipated space combat simulation, EVE: Valkyrie, while everyone that purchases the kit will also get Lucky’s Tale and an Xbox One controller.
