At an event in Los Angeles, California, Nokia has officially launched its professional 360 degree camera OZO onto the market. Revealed back in July this year the OZO marks the companies first foray into the virtual reality (VR) field after selling its mobile phone business to Microsoft.
The OZO camera has eight lenses with 2K x 2K sensors and eight microphones around its surface, enabling filmmakers to create 360 degree video in real time, which can be viewed in a VR head-mounted display (HMD). Another feature Nokia has touted is the Ozo’s ability to churn out a low-resolution version of the footage in a few minutes for filmmakers to see. This process normally could take hours as the VR footage is stitched together.
For the event Nokia partnered Capitol Records to conduct a live VR broadcast concert performance from Best Coast from the top of the iconic Capitol Records tower, to attendees at the event a couple of miles away.
The OZO’s professional credentials are shown in the price, with units now available to pre-order on the official site for a deposit of $5000 USD. The full price for the unit is $60,000 USD, which includes the camera, Digital Cartridge/Media Module, camera mount, docking station and power supply.
Alongside the camera there will be a wealth of accessories available for filmmakers including the OZO Digital Cartridge which features a rechargeable battery, and a removable OZO Media Module that supports recording for over 45 minutes for $5000 USD. And the OZO Docking Station which accepts the OZO Digital Cartridge for battery re-charge and media transfer functions to a host computer via a USB-3 cable for $1500 USD.
