Its testament to virtual realities (VR) growing popularity and broad appeal that companies both global, national and local are using the technology to advertise and promote themselves with innovative software and experiences. Los Angeles-based radio station KCRW is doing just that with a new app launch today which will give viewers access to performances by bands at the station.

The KCRW VR app will give fans the opportunity to view live sessions filmed at the station’s legendary basement studio for its flagship music program, Morning Becomes Eclectic. For the launch the app will feature exclusive videos  from artists including, Death Cab for Cutie – “The Ghosts of Beverly Drive”, Brandi Carlile – “Murder in the City”, Thundercat – “Them Changes”, and Purity Ring – “Stranger Than Earth”. The performances are filmed using a custom 360-degree camera rig comprised of eight GoPro cameras, giving a fully immersive experience.

Jennifer Ferro, KCRW president said in a statement: “Now for the first time, you can be in our studio with the artists. It’s a revolutionary change in the way KCRW curated artists and music can be discovered. We are always striving for creative ways to connect with our community and we’re so excited to try out this new technology together.”

The app can be downloaded for Android and iOS later today for use with Google Cardboard, and a specially designed KCRW Cardboard by Mr. Scruff is also available to buy for $5.00 USD from KCRW.com.

VRFocus will continue to follow all the latest VR news and updates as they’re announced.
