Virtual reality (VR) fans are likely already familiar with Jaunt, a cinematic VR company. Over the course of the past year the company has released a number of 360 degree live action experiences covering everything from music with Jack White to documentaries like the recent Inside Syria VR. Today, the company is announcing something entirely new. Jaunt has teamed up with the Sundance Institute to announce a brand new VR residency program.

Named Sundance Institute New Frontier | Jaunt VR Residency Program, this new concept is designed to help artists working within VR. The first artist to be selected for the six-month program is Lynette Wallworth, with three others still to be chosen.

Wallworth is taking part in the program with her own project, Collisions. This tells the tale of an Aboriginal elder named Nyarri Nyarri Morgan, who has lived in the Pilbara desert of Western Australia for 1000 generations. His life is changed dramatically with the introduction of Western science and technology.

“Virtual reality represents an entirely new medium for entertainment and media, one where creativity is the new currency, artistic vision trumps tradition and immersion intensifies viewer emotions,” said Cliff Plumer, President of Jaunt Studios. “As we drive forward our mission is to empower the next generation of artists and filmmakers. The launch of the Sundance Institute New Frontier | Jaunt VR Residency is further proof that cinematic virtual reality is a major force in the evolution of storytelling, and of our commitment to get this technology into the hands of cutting edge filmmakers and storytellers.”

VRFocus will continue to follow any and all news from Jaunt, reporting back with the latest from the company.
