Crysis developer and CRYENGINE creator Crytek surprised virtual reality (VR) fans last week by revealing that its upcoming IP, Robinson: The Journey, would be heading to the PlayStation VR head-mounted display (HMD) for PlayStation 4. The news was confirmed during the PlayStation Paris Games Week press conference in France. No other platforms were confirmed for the title at the time, and it later appeared that it would indeed by exclusive to VR. Today, Crytek has clarified the situation to VRFocus, noting that the title is heading to Sony Computer Entertainment’s (SCE’s) device ‘first’.
“When we originally announced Robinson: The Journey in June this year, we said it was an “all-new IP built from the ground up for virtual reality technologies,”” the company said in a statement to VRFocus. “We are very excited to be partnering with Sony on the game and launching it first for PlayStation VR, and we’re aiming to take full advantage of everything the platform has to offer.
“As with every IP we create, our vision and ambitions extend long into the future, and we look forward to as many players as possible experiencing Robinson: The Journey.”
It would seem then, that Robinson: The Journey could make its way to other VR platforms in the future, but the PlayStation VR version is all the company is ready to talk about at this time. The title casts players as a young boy named Robin that crash lands on an alien planet infested with dinosaurs and must survive along with an AI companion as they come face-to-face with the beasts. It’s not yet known when the videogame will launch, although PlayStation VR itself isn’t expected until the first half of 2016.
