It’s well known that the first consumer version of the Oculus Rift virtual reality (VR) head-mounted display (HMD) will be far from the last. Though deemed market-ready, creator Oculus VR is well aware that there’s a long list of features to be improved, refined and adjusted in order to make the VR experience even more compelling than it already is. But what about HTC and its own upcoming device, the HTC Vive? Will VR fans see new versions of this kit release over time too? According to HTC itself, that’s ‘only natural’.
HTC’s Senior Manager of Product Marketing, J.B. McRee, said as much in an interview with VRFocus that will be published later on in the week. He noted that the tech could well advance in the future, but the company is focused on the original kit for now. “Sure, it’s only natural that technology does advance,” McRee replied when asked if the HTC Vive was something that could possibly be iterated upon. “Right now we’re kind of laser-focused on what we believe is the first and most compelling end-to-end VR experience and that’s HTC Vive and so that’s what we’re looking at right now.”
For now, the original HTC Vive is set to see a limited launch at some point in the last 2 months of 2015. It’s not clear exactly how many units will go on sale but those that do at least won’t be restricted to the USA. Following that, HTC is planning a full launch for the kit in Q1 2016, which is the same window that the Oculus Rift itself will be arriving in. Pricing details and specific launch dates for either HMD are yet to be announced, although expect to hear details in the near future given that this timeframe draws close.
