Epic Games announced a big step forward for virtual reality (VR) development this week, revealing a new feature for Unreal Engine 4 editor that allows studios to create VR content from within a head-mounted display (HMD). The company hasn’t yet confirmed when it will be launching the upgrade – such information is being saved for the 2016 Game Developers Conference (GDC) in March – but, when it does launch, it will be available to download for free.

Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney confirmed as much in a recent blog post detailing the new system. “These are the early days of the revolution in immersive VR content creation, but we’re so excited about what’s up and running that we couldn’t keep it a secret anymore!” Sweeney said. “VR movement and editing controls are functional, along with key parts of the Unreal Editor UI, including the Details Panel and the Content Browser.  We’ll be showing more and announcing the release date at GDC on Wednesday March 16, 2016.  And when it’s released, it will be a built-in feature of the freely-downloadable Unreal Engine, with full source on GitHub.”

Unreal Engine 4 is, of course, free for anyone to downloaded and use, with developers sharing a percentage of the profits when they make a certain amount. It sounds like the VR editor will be a part of this package.
