Last week news broke that Dead or Alive Xtreme 3, the latest in Koei Tecmo and Ninja Theory’s spin-off series to the popular fighting videogame, would not be coming to the West, instead only releasing in Japan and Asia. This decision, along with reasoning on an official page that linked it to the title’s portrayal of women, was met with predictable backlash from the fan community. Now Koei Tecmo has issued a statement to VRFocus, noting that it is ‘consciously respecting’ a global audience by not bringing the virtual reality (VR) compatible title to either the US or Europe.
“The comments recently made by an employee regarding DEAD OR ALIVE Xtreme 3 on the official DEAD OR ALIVE Facebook page only reflect that individual’s opinion and not the opinion or business strategy of Koei Tecmo Games,” the statement reads.
“We remain focused on delivering the best in fighting entertainment to our fans around the world, while consciously respecting and strategising to support the different global audiences the DEAD OR ALIVE franchise lends itself to.
“DEAD OR ALIVE Xtreme 3 remains in development and is still planned for release in Japan and Asia only.”
Dead or Alive Xtreme 3 is a beachball title that features characters from the main series. The spin-off franchise has always been a controversial one given its depiction of women in beachwear, though this latest entry is the first to also include men in the roster. Back at the Tokyo Game Show (TGS) in September 2015, it was announced that the title would be supporting the PlayStation VR HMD on PlayStation 4, but it now looks as if this is one VR title that Western players won’t get to try out.
