There can be no doubt that one of the most intriguing and potentially life altering uses for virtual reality (VR) technology is in the health sector. On VRFocus over the last few months we’ve already reported on how VR can be used as a tool for health education, how digital avatars are being seen as the future of treating patients and is being increasingly turned to as an addition to rehabilitation programs, both physical and mental ailments.  It is even being used by researchers to help identify conditions earlier.

Now the aforementioned digital avatar idea is being taken in a different direction, that of cosmetic surgery by New York-based practice bodySCULPT.

bodySCULPT has recently revealed they will be the first such establishment in the US to offer a service where potential customers will be able to see and experience how potential surgeries will alter the way they look in advance. The experience, which will use the Oculus Rift head mounted display (HMD), will show the potential results of surgeries such as liposuction, buttock augmentation and other body sculpting techniques.  It is hoped that through doing this it will provide ‘essential support’ for such procedures.

Dr. Spero Theodorou, plastic surgeon at bodySCULPT commented on the new service:

“The relationship between the plastic surgeon and the patient is now enhanced to the point of bringing virtual as close to reality as technically possible, with these glasses, a patient can virtually see their imagination come alive viewing their conceivable future in real time.”

VRFocus will continue to bring you new uses and developments of both VR and AR technologies as we hear about them. Be sure to check back regularly for all the latest news.
