When EVE Online developer CCP Games revealed EVE: Valkyrie back in 2013 everyone assumed that this would be the developer’s next title and first ever virtual reality (VR) project to release. As it turns out, that isn’t quite the case. Work on EVE: Valkyrie is said to be progressing smoothly on both the Oculus Rift and the PlayStation VR head-mounted displays (HMD), but the developer has today released a new title for the Gear VR mobile-based HMD from Oculus VR and Samsung. That title is Gunjack.

Developed by CCP Games’ Shanghai Studio, this new experience was created using Epic Games’ Unreal Engine 4. In fact, it’s actually the first title on Gear VR to utilise the popular middleware. It takes the form of an on-rails space shooter in which players are put in control of a gun on a large mining vessel and tasked with taking down waves of enemies. Aiming is carried out using Gear VR’s head-tracking technology and players can tap the Gear VR’s on-board touchpad to fire their weapons.

“Our goal from the beginning was to create a showcase title for Gear VR,” said Jean-Charles Gaudechon, executive producer of Gunjack. “We pushed as far we could to reach a level of immersion that would transport players to a different world when they put the Gear VR headset on, and we hope they will have as much fun playing Gunjack as we had building it.” The titles costs $9.99 USD.

Meanwhile, EVE: Valkyrie is currently going through pre-Alpha testing, and is expected to release in 2016. A full launch date is yet to be revealed, though the Oculus Rift and PlayStation VR kits aren’t expected until Q1 and H1 2016 respectively.

VRFocus will continue to follow Gunjack and all other Gear VR titles closely, reporting back with the latest updates on them.
