Within the next six months each and every major virtual reality (VR) head-mounted display (HMD) should be on the market. The Oculus Rift launches pre-orders today and will start to ship before the end of March, while the HTC Vive will arrive in April. PlayStation VR, the only console-based HMD revealed thus far, will be launching before the end of June, but just how well is the kit expected to perform? According to one analyst, the PlayStation VR price could be more than the PlayStation 4 itself, but still sell 1.9 million units.
That is according to a new report from Super Data Research that was launched this week. One part of the report on consumer adoption of VR in 2016 looks at the percentage of the market each type of HMD will own by the end of the year. In the console VR space, the report suggests that 1.9 million units will be sold, taking up 5 percent of the overall market. The only device listed in this area so far is PlayStation VR, which it estimates will cost at least $50 USD more than the $350 PlayStation 4, ranging between $400 – $600.
Elsewhere the report suggests that the vast majority of the market will be owned by ‘Light Mobile VR’ such as Google Cardboard towards the end of the year, with some 27.1 million units sold, taking up 71 percent. PC VR comes next, with the likes of the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive selling a combined total of 6.6 million and taking up 17 percent. ‘Premium Mobile VR’, which concerns high-end HMDs such as Samsung’s Gear VR, is expected to sell 2.5 million units and control 7 percent of the market.
It will be interested to see how these predictions unfold as 2016 plays out. With no price for any HMD yet reveal (though we’ll know the Oculus Rift’s by the end of the day), it’s really anyone’s guess as to how VR will perform right now.
