A Guide to PlayStation Move for PlayStation VR

The DualShock 4 is the default input device for the PlayStation 4 console and many PlayStation VR videogame titles have been designed with this in mind. However, it’s hard to deny that virtual reality (VR) is more immersive when your hands can actually become a part of the experience, and for this PlayStation VR will utilise PlayStation Move controllers.

Originally launched as an accessory for the PlayStation 3, PlayStation Move controllers may not stand up to the precision of the HTC Vive’s motion-controllers or the forthcoming Oculus Touch, but they perform adequately for what is needed for basic input in first-person VR experiences. With that, many PlayStation VR titles will require PlayStation Move, so while not essential it is clear that PlayStation Move would be a wise investment.

    PlayStation Move Controllers

Until now, PlayStation Move controllers have been sold individually as standard. However, with PlayStation VR titles mostly requiring two PlayStation Move controllers (one for each hand), Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) has seen fit to offer a new bundle including two. That’s certainly nice of them, however it’s easy to find two individual PlayStation Move controllers for less than the price of SIE’s forthcoming package deal.

    PlayStation Move Navigation Controller

The PlayStation Move Navigation Controller was originally proposed as a locomotion supplement to the PlayStation Move, similar to the Nunchuk Controller for Nintendo’s Wii Remote. While it has been confirmed to VRFocus that the PlayStation Move Navigation Controller can work with PlayStation VR, there are yet to be any videogame titles announced that will support this input solution. With that in mind, it’s unlikely that many will want to invest in the PlayStation Move Navigation Controller prior to the launch of PlayStation VR.

    PlayStation Move-only Games

While PlayStation Move isn’t essential for PlayStation VR, there are a number of videogame titles that have already been announced that require the use of this secondary input device. PlayStation VR Worlds and Until Dawn: A Rush of Blood, for example, have both been confirmed as launch titles for PlayStation VR and require PlayStation Move, whereas Psychonauts and the Rhombus of Ruin can be played simply with a DualShock 4 controller. As time progresses there will be more titles in both camps – Resident Evil 7 biohazard, for example, is played with the DualShock 4 entirely, while Loading Human will only be playable with PlayStation Move – but for now the selection of titles for each input device is decidedly mixed.
