Sony Computer Entertainment (SCE) has already revealed what’s thought of as the near-final version of its PlayStation VR virtual reality (VR) head-mounted display (HMD) for the PlayStation 4. The new device made its debut in March 2015 – roughly a year on from when the original prototype was introduced as Project Morpheus – with a number of improvements to tracking, display and more. That said, there are still some aspects of PlayStation VR that fans can expect to improve before it launches for consumers. One such aspect is the system’s latency.

Ram Madhavan of SCE America’s Developer Services and Support team recently said as much at Unity Technologies’ Unite 2015 event in Boston, Massachusetts. During a talk titled ‘Embrace Virtual Reality with PlayStation VR’ Madhavan noted that fans and developers should see ‘more improvement’ on the latency in head-tracking, which refers to just how fast the HMD will keep up with a player turning their head. “System latency, you’re already down 18 miliseconds and we’re not done yet,” he said. “I’m sure there will be more improvement as we get closer to the launch.”

PlayStation VR is set to launch in the first half of 2016, though a specific date and price are yet to be announced. The kit includes a 5.7-inch, 1080p OLED screen with a 120Hz refresh rate that’s even capable of ‘reprojecting’ titles that are running in 60fps natively to 120fps in-HMD. It also uses 360 degree positional tracking with the help of 9 LEDs that are tracked with the PlayStation Camera and provides a 100 degree field of view (FOV).

VRFocus will continue to follow PlayStation VR closely, reporting back with the latest updates on its progress.
