This week Samsung has announced the latest version of its larger Note smartphone series, the Galaxy Note7. The new device will be unveiled at the Samsung Galaxy Unpacked event 2016 taking place in New York on 2nd August.
This is the first time the company has officially confirmed the existence of the device which has been rumoured for a while now. Along with the announcement Samsung has unveiled a couple of teasing details, saying there will be added functionality for included S-Pen to use with the larger screen.
Interestingly the announcement also details why the new device is called Galaxy Note7 instead of Galaxy Note6. The posting states: “There are a couple reasons why. First, the Galaxy Note7 will complement our Galaxy S7 and S7 edge, and unify our product portfolio. Second, the Galaxy Note7 will minimize confusion about the latest mobile technology from Samsung, and provide full alignment with Galaxy S smartphone.”
What’s not been mentioned is anything to do with virtual reality (VR). It’s unclear if the Galaxy Note 7 will support the current Gear VR head-mounted display (HMD) but it also might be the first device from Samsung that could support Google’s upcoming VR headset Daydream. Google announced several smartphone partners at its I/O conference back in May of which Samsung was one of them.
The event will be live-streamed at 11.00am EDT on Tuesday 2nd August at samsung.com.
