For much of the Oculus Rift’s short life, one major question has surrounded the virtual reality (VR) head-mounted display (HMD): when it is coming out? That question has finally been answered, as creator Oculus VR last year confirmed that a retail version of the device will be launching in Q1 2016. With that query now out of the way, the next question that company faces is obvious: how much is it going to cost? Today, that question has also finally been answered.
The Oculus Rift price will be set at $599 USD/£499 GBP. That price point was revealed as Oculus VR’s launched pre-orders for the kit ahead of shipping later on this quarter. CEO Brendan Iribe had previously said that the ‘all-in’ cost of the device and a PC powerful enough to run it would be around $1,500. That gives fans an idea of how much they can expect to pay for the PC itself, the recommended specs of which Oculus VR has also already detailed.
This price doesn’t just concern the Oculus Rift, however. Included with the kit will be an Xbox One controller as well as a copy of Playful’s VR platform title, Lucky’s Tale and – for those that pre-order- EVE: Valkyrie from CCP Games.
This makes the Oculus Rift the first of the three major PC and console-based HMDs to get a price point. Valve and HTC’s Vive has been shipping out to developers for free recently, but the pair have in the past suggested that the kit itself will be fairly expensive when it goes on sale to consumers in April 2016. As for PlayStation VR, the PlayStation 4 HMD from Sony Computer Entertainment (SCE), a price is yet to be revealed, although the kit is set to launch in the first half of this year, meaning details hopefully aren’t far off.
There’s still plenty more to learn about the Oculus Rift, some of which will hopefully be in the remainder of the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, Nevada this week. VRFocus will continue to follow the device closely, reporting back with the latest updates on its progress.
