Yesterday VRFocus reported on a leaked image of what was said to be a Daydream compatible head-mounted display (HMD). Today, Xiaomi, the company that was in question during these rumours, has released its own head-mounted display (HMD) – but there was no mention of Google Daydream compatibility.
Even though the rumours of its connection with Google Daydream haven’t been addressed, it still seems that the picture that was leaked very much is the same as the official pictures released. As tweeted by Xiaomi itself, Mi VR is its first lycra case VR HMD with – as pointed out in the leak article – a two zip design. This design does very much stand out against the other mobile HMDs.
Further details of the HMD itself is that it fits 4.7″ – 5.7″ phones, and this is doable with the anti-slip strip that holds it in place without unwanted button presses.
As you can see from the official pictures, there are headstraps that attach the HMD to your head, but it still has an almost unfinished look to it – however there is a large amount of room for it to be personalised, and that is the point that they are going on. There is one button on the top that most interactions can be made with, very much like the previous consumer Gear VR.
It comes with a Mi VR app, and the company is pairing up with various Chinese companies to create an open VR platform – and that is the catch, it is only available for China at the moment. As reported by TechCrunch, not even those in China can purchase it yet, though, as it is only open to beta testers who signed up 1st August. Another piece of info that the tech news website was told was that it has plans to make the headset more widely available in the future.
However, over at VRTalk there is still much optimism of the Mi VR being compatible with Google’s Daydream, but there is yet to be any official evidence.
