It’s possibly one of the first movements everyone goes for when trying out motion controls in virtual reality (VR) – dancing and waving your hands about. Leap Motion has taken advantage of this and is teaming up with two other major VR players to bring the world’s first VR dance competition.
Using a Leap Motion Controller, 16 contestants will have to show some pretty awesome moves to compete in the finals where the prize will be the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 graphics card worth $449 (USD) – which cannot be exchanged for cash, in case you’re wondering.
The criteria of who can compete are as follows: you must be over 18, you must has a registered AltspaceVR account, you cannot be an employee of any of the companies involved, and immediate connections to those who do work for the companies are also not allowed to enter.
The five judges that will determine whether or not you are the next Gene Kelly of VR are: Bruce Wooden, the Head of Developer and Community Relations at AltspaceVR; Eva Hoerth, VR Evangelist and Design Researcher; the creators of The Wave VR; Unity Labs’ Timoni West; and NVIDIA’s Head of VR Business Development, Zvi Greenstein.
The way in which the contestants will be judged all depends on the movement of your hands and head, and you will be awarded between 1 and 10 points. For this, both hand tracking and head tracking is required, which can be accomplished with the Leap Motion controller and either an Oculus Rift (DK2 or CV1) or the HTC Vive.
To enter the competition, the qualifying round will take place at 7pm PDT on 11th August in the dance competition room in AltspaceVR. 16 finalists will then be taken to dance for the prize on 18th August where they will take to the dance floor one by one.
