International US news outlet The New York Times has a long standing relationship with virtual reality (VR) production company Vrse.works. The pair have collaborated on projects including The Displaced and Walking NY. Now the companies have revealed their latest project Smile More: The Journey of a Song a film featuring band members of soul/ R&B band The Internet.
Smile More: The Journey of a Song take viewers into the home studio of front woman Syd tha Kyd in Los Angeles, as the band prepare for a world tour in support of their grammy nominated album, Ego Death. The journey is the development of new song Syd tha Kyd wants to teach the band, called Smile More. The film immerses viewers in the creative process from rehearsal to the bands live stage performance.
The VR experience has been created by Lance Bangs, whose behind music videos for bands including Sonic Youth,The Thermals,, The Black Keys, Green Day, Arcade Fire, Belle & Sebastian,Yeah Yeah Yeahs, R.E.M. & Odd Future.
Smile More can be viewed online at Vrse.works website and controlled with a mouse or WASD keys to look around. Users can also watch via their smartphones by downloading the Vrse app. If you own a head-mounted display (HMD) like Google Cardboard, that can be used for the full immersive experience.
