The Crytek press conference at the Game Developers Conference (GDC) 2016 has revealed lots of new details on its plans for the future including virtual reality (VR). Its revealed a new VR videogame Project Sky Harbor which will be on demonstration at the event. The biggest news comes in the form of its middleware game development software CryEngine, which is used by developers around the world.

The studio has now announced CryEngine V, terming it ‘the next stage of CryEngine’.

Details revealed at the press conference include Direct X 12 support; new overhead rendering; Volumetric cloud support for VR; FMOD Studio support; a new particle system; C# enabled and built in support for the main head-mounted displays (HMDs) due to launch this year including: Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, Razers OSVR and Sony Computer Entertainment’s (SCE’s) PlayStation VR headset.

Crytek hasn’t revealed when CryEngine V will be available to upgrade to for developers using previous versions, but VRFocus will find out further information and report back as soon as possible.
