Last month HTC revealed that Valve, its partner behind the HTC Vive virtual reality (VR) head-mounted display (HMD), would be hosting a content showcase for the device towards the end of January 2016 in Seattle, Washington. We now also know that said showcase will be taking place on 28th January, with plenty of developers expected to have experiences both old and new on display. VR fans had also hoped that Valve itself might finally have a full VR videogame to debut but, sadly, it’s recently been confirmed that this won’t be the case.

The company’s Chet Faliszek took to Twitter to confirm as much, simply stating: “Just to clarify for everyone, the content showcase is about highlighting select 3rd party experiences. Valve is not showing content there.”

This will no doubt come as a disappointment to many fans, especially after HTC released a new trailer for the HTC Vive at this month’s Consumer Electronics Show (CES) that seemed to strongly hint that a new entry in the Portal franchise could come to the device. The trailer showed a figure that looked strikingly similar to series protagonist Chell using powers to blow up a wall. Valve itself hasn’t commented on the trailer just yet. Of course, the Portal series’ fictional company, Aperture Science, has already been used to showcase the HTC Vive and its SteamVR tracking features.

The HTC Vive will be going on sale in April 2016, with pre-orders expected to arrive in late February. Recently the kit saw something of a refresh with an updated development edition named the Vive Pre. The smaller, refined kit features a front-facing camera that improves the kit’s chaperone system, highlight objects and people within an environment that the user is walking around using the Room Scale user tracking.
