The first preview build of Unreal Engine 4 is now available to download. Known as 4.12, this latest edition adds support for the Open Source Virtual Reality (OSVR) platform and brings Epic Games’ VR Editor software into the fold as standard.

Razer’s OSVR platform was announced at CES 2015, Las Vegas, and has since been gaining significant traction in the education sector. The recently launched Hacker Dev Kit (HDK) 1.4 is the primary head-mounted display (HMD) for the platform, though many others are also compatible.

Epic Games’ VR Editor is the most comprehensive suite for level designing in VR currently available. While its release during the Game Developers Conference (GDC), San Francisco, last month offered all Unreal Engine 4 developers the opportunity to utilise the software it did require an external download via Github. With Unreal Engine 4.12, this will no longer be the case.

Additional updates for virtual reality (VR) developers include improved Stereo Layers Support, now working on all platforms and framerate-independent loading movie support.

You can download the Unreal Engine 4.12 Preview 1 via the Unreal Engine 4 client. However, it is advised that this edition is not for use with commercial products and instead reserved for evaluation purposes. VRFocus will keep you updated with all the latest updates to Unreal Engine 4 relevant to VR development.
