This week at GDC Unity Technologies has announced not only two new versions of its middleware videogame development engine, but also two new features that can help small teams synchronise their work better, and sets industry standards with its Certification Program.

Unity 5.3.4 is for developers who are at the point of launching their product, giving them the latest set of features and tools in a stable environment. The second update released, Unity 5.4, is more useful for those who are still in development with features ideal in experimentation and prototype mode, and is focused on new visual features, improved performance, and has a major VR rendering upgrade. In addition these updates there is also Unity Collaborate, indicative of its name, is a new feature that allows small teams to save, share, and sync their Unity projects all in the cloud, giving indie developers a more accessible platform to produce titles with.

John Riccitiello, CEO of Unity, said in a press release: “We remain focused on democratizing development, solving hard problems and enabling success,” He went on to say: “The two new versions we are launching today will provide something for all developer needs and set a more stable baseline for future innovation.”

Unity Technologies also announced the Unity Certification Program, the first industry credential that sets standards for game production with Unity. This allows specifically those starting up with game development to be legitimate within the industry. Dr. Damon Daylamani-Zad, Senior Lecturer in the Department of Computing and Information Systems at the University of Greenwich, said: “This is especially useful for graduates, as they can officially demonstrate their skills to prospective employers. It also reduces the risk of employing developers and graduates as they can now support their CVs with an official evaluation. Finally, this approach also helps the Higher Education to align their focus with the industry standards.”

The two new versions are currently available, Unity Collaborate is currently open for developers, and applications for the Unity Certification Program are open too.
