20th Century Fox’s The Martian: VR Experience was one of the virtual reality (VR) highlights at CES, Las Vegas, earlier this month. Playable on both the Oculus Rift (with Oculus Touch motion-controllers) and the HTC Vive Pre, The Martian: VR Experience has since been confirmed as set to receive a consumer release in 2016.

Developed by Fox Innovation Lab, in partnership with 20th Century Fox, RSA Films and The VR Company, The Martian: VR Experience follows last year’s WILD – The Experience and will act as the label’s first commercial endeavor. Executive produced by Ridley Scott and directed by Robert Stromberg, The Martian: VR Experience is an interactive adventure with viewers participating from astronaut Mark Watney’s perspective, performing tasks that will facilitate his chances for survival and rescue.

The response to The Martian: VR Experience from CES was overwhelmingly positive, with acclaimed director Guillermo Del Toro stating that he ‘had a blast’ with the VR experience. VRFocus got hands-on with The Martian: VR Experience at CES, stating in a preview: “The Martian: VR Experience is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful VR titles VRFocus has yet witnessed.”

The Martian: VR Experience will be made available for purchase on tethered VR platforms in 2016. No further information on the release of The Martian: VR Experience is currently available, though VRFocus will of course keep you updated with all the latest details on this and other VR projects from Fox Innovation Lab.
