Its been over two years since Berserk Games launched and completed its Kickstarter crowd-funding campaign for Tabletop Simulator. One of the stretch goals hit was virtual reality (VR) support for the Oculus Rift head-mounted display (HMD), which has yet to be implemented. Today the developer has now revealed new details on its VR plans – which are still in motion – with a change in support.

Posting an update via Tabletop Simulator’s Steam page, Beserk Games has now stated that while the team is working on VR the focus is no longer on Oculus Rift, its now switched to rival HTC Vive at the moment.

Berserk Games wrote: “This has been brought up a LOT recently, especially with the release of the Vive. When will we get VR for Tabletop Simulator? VR has been thought about since our Kickstarter 2 years ago. It was one of our stretch goals and just like you, we’d love for it to happen! That being said, we can’t give you a date of when it will be done, because we just don’t know!”

“However, we ARE working on it! And so far progress is looking good! We are currently working with the Vive, so that will be our focus right now (Sorry Oculus users!). There’s still a lot to do, but it really will be a pretty cool experience all around to get VR into Tabletop Simulator! Since VR is our focus, updates will be slowing down, so don’t expect to see any patches in the next few weeks.”

Tabletop Simulator offers a blend of multiplayer physics, a sandbox, and a prototyping tool, giving players the ability to produce their own original games and rules for others to play on, in addition to the standard games built-in.

So for HTC Vive users who own Tabletop Simulator, or want it on the headset it’s good news, but you’ll need to be patient. VRFocus will continue its coverage of Tabletop Simulator, reporting back with any further updates.
