The Sydney Opera House is no stranger to hosting 360-degree virtual reality (VR) experiences in partnership with Samsung. In the past the Sydney Opera House and the company behind the Samsung Gear VR headset have collaborated to create immersive 360-degree concert experiences and now the companies have announced that they’ve renewed their partnerships agreement, extending it for a further five years, in order to continue collaborating on new technologies through the venue’s Decade of Renewal that was launched in 2013 on the opera house’s 40th anniversary.

The first VR experience that will come out of the renewed partnership is called Climbing The Sails. This experience will be exclusively available later this year in a newly created space inside the opera house’s own box office foyer. The 360-degree immersive video will allow visitors to don a Samsung Gear VR headset and climb up the iconic sails of the opera house to look out over the city.

The building’s seating area will also feature more of Samsung’s technology in addition to digital content and interactive displays that visitors will be able to use to find out more about the venue’s history as well as its plans for the future.

Samsung corporate VP and CMO, Philip Newtown, said the ongoing partnership with the Sydney Opera House was all about improving and enriching visitor experience: “We hope to deepen the relationship Australian have with the iconic building and inspire the next generation through the VR experience to engage and enjoy the Sydney Opera House in a whole new way.”

As more news about future events from the partnership between Samsung and the Sydney Opera House become available, VRFocus will report.
