Sony Dates its CES 2016 Press Conference

The 2016 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, Nevada is right around the corner, taking place from 6th – 9th January. Plenty of new virtual reality (VR) updates are expected from the show, primarily from HTC with its HTC Vive head-mounted display (HMD) and Oculus VR with its Oculus Rift, both of which are PC-based devices. It’s also possible, however, that we see an update on PlayStation VR, the PlayStation 4 compatible kit from Sony Computer Entertainment (SCE). That’s yet to be confirmed, though Sony itself has recently dated its CES 2016 press conference.

The show will take place a day before CES itself gets underway, kicking off on 5th January at 17:00 PST (which works out at 01:00 on the 6th for GMT). An official blog from which fans can watch a livestream of the conference has now been set up, and is currently offering a look back at Sony’s 2015 showing.

Again, it’s important to note that there’s no telling just how much of a presence PlayStation VR will have at the show. Last year’s showcase – back when the device was known as Project Morpheus – didn’t make a single mention of the kit, and SCE hasn’t teased the possibility of hearing an update on the device yet. The company has more than enough ground to cover without VR, of course, and will no doubt focus on its smartphone business along with other sectors such as its TVs.

That said, PlayStation VR is set to release in this first half of the year, and SCE is running out of opportunities to announce the final release date and a full price on an industry stage. If not at CES then when? That’s surely a question that many will be asking heading into tomorrow’s show.

VRFocus will be continuing to follow PlayStation VR closely, reporting back with the latest updates on the kit.
