This week has been all about the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive in terms of virtual reality (VR) head-mounted displays (HMDs), which the former going up for pre-order at $599 USD and the latter revealing a new development kit in the Vive Pre. Sony, however, held its annual Consumer Electronics Show (CES) press conference earlier in the week and didn’t make a single mention of its HMD, PlayStation VR. Despite this, CEO Kaz Hirai is anticipating that more than 100 titles are on their way to the kit in the near future.
“Well I think the fact that we have more than 200 developers signed up for the PlayStation VR programme who are working on probably about 100 or more titles that will play on PlayStation VR is a testament to the kind of support that we’re getting from the content creation community on PlayStation VR,” Hirai told the BBC following the press conference. “So I think that we have a lot good support and it will be a great product coming out later this year.”
When asked what separates PlayStation VR from the pack, the CEO replied: “I think that, for PlayStation, the fact that we offer a very immersive gameplay experience on the PlayStation 4, even on a flat screen panel today and really taking that into the virtual reality world is more of an immersive gameplay experience that we’re going to be able to provide. So for us it’s all about making it a better and more immersive gameplay experience which separates us from everybody else.
“When we see, first all of, with the install base of the PlayStation 4 now close to 36 million units, that there in of itself is a huge audience that we’re going to cater to number one. And once we have a lot of people who are really in to virtual reality through games I think we will be able to expand beyond gaming, especially because we have a lot of content that we create ourselves as Sony Picture Entertainment,” Hirai concluded.
