Despite some negative reactions to the $599 USD price tag, it appears that pre-orders for the Oculus Rift virtual reality (VR) head-mounted display (HMD) are performing just fine. Those lucky enough to pre-order the kit first will have their units shipped on 28th March 2016, but those slots quickly filled up and were soon pushed back to April. It didn’t take long for the expected ship date to then move back to May, either. Today that date has again been pushed, now displaying a June 2016 window.
Anyone heading to the official Oculus VR site will find this new shipping date though it’s possible that, as fraudulent orders are ‘weeded out’, some of these orders could come forward by a month. Throughout yesterday Oculus VR figureheads such as Oculus Rift creator Palmer Luckey noted that the device was selling much faster than the company had expected, although Oculus VR won’t actually take any money off of customers until the unit has shipped in a few months’ time. Will pre-orders be pushed back any further as time goes on?
When the Oculus Rift does ship, it will contain a host of extras to help justify its price tag. These include two free videogames in Playful’s Lucky’s Tale and CCP Games’ EVE: Valkyrie, the latter of which will only be free to those that pre-order the device. The set also contains an Xbox One controller and a wireless adapter to connect it to a PC, as well as a much more simplified input scheme known as the Oculus Remote, which is designed to give first-time VR users a very quick introduction to the device.
The kit will be the first major VR HMD to launch, followed by the HTC Vive in April 2016 and the PlayStation VR at some point in the first half of this year.
