One of the ways we can judge virtual reality’s (VR) success in mainstream adoption is to see the bigger names in all industries taking it on, and so far one of the biggest names, the BBC, has already done so. Now Sky, the television and internet providers who was brought about by Rupert Murdoch, is to launch its own VR app.

As reported by TechRadar and according to the tweet sent out by the corporation, the Sky VR App is set to arrive this summer. It appears that the corporation have joined together tightly with Jaunt, leading from its partnership and investment in the VR content creators and publishers.

In a statement, which is also echoed by the tweet, the entertainment providers said: “This summer we will launch a Sky VR app, confirming Sky as the home of quality VR content, along with a new mission to create high-end productions, exclusive to Sky VR.”

TechRadar was told by Neil Graham, Sky VR Executive Producer: “Sky is uniquely placed and we are always been looking at new ways to get content out there – we have access to movies, TV and sport, and we need to populate VR with mind-blowing content.”

It has also been reported that the VR app will hold 20 pieces of content, but it isn’t clear which head-mounted displays (HMD) the app will support, but if it is coming from Jaunt then it could be assumed that it will cover most bases with Cardboard, Gear VR, HTC Vive, and Oculus Rift, just the same as its own app – but this is just a guess.
